Lies spread faster than the truth — study

A study ”The spread of true and false news online”, published in Science, shows that fake news on the Internet spreads “further, faster, deeper and wider than the truth.”

Interestingly, the fake news was more recent than the truth. Therefore, people were more likely to share new information.

Researchers found that lies are retweeted 70% more often than the truth.

Fake news spreads about six times faster than the truth.

About 3 million people tweeted about 126,000 rumors between 2006 and 2017.
